Caricature is exaggeration with a point. A good caricature does not just distort; it recognises the features that make someone or something instantly recognisable and pushes them until the personality leaps off the page. It is fast, communicative and, done well, surprisingly warm. The style sits between portrait and cartoon, keeping enough likeness to be identifiable while amplifying the traits that carry character. On the Owl roster, illustrators take this in different directions – some lean into narrative and line, others into graphic reduction – but both approaches serve the same goal: a face that communicates instantly. Here is what the style looks like in practice and the briefs it handles best.

1

Admiral - distilled likeness in clean graphic form

Admiral reduces a likeness to its essential shapes; a strong silhouette, a decisive curve, one or two exaggerated features that do all the work. The result reads instantly at small sizes and across languages. This purer take on caricature is built for icons, avatars, badge designs, app onboarding and brand mascots where the image must survive cropping, scaling and fast scrolling. When a brief asks for a face that works at small sizes and on a billboard, this is the approach. The graphic clarity also translates well to single-colour applications, embroidery and motion where fine line work would fall apart.

Tobi Frank - editorial caricature with crisp wit

Tobi Frank draws caricatures that live in newspapers and magazines: sharp, economical and always readable at column width. His line is clean and the colour flat, so the image holds its shape whether it sits next to a 600-word profile or stands alone as a spot illustration. The caricature here leans editorial; the exaggeration serves the argument of the piece, not just the likeness. That makes it a natural fit for op-ed portraits, author columns, podcast guest art and any brief where the picture has to carry editorial weight in a tight space. The same graphic clarity works for icons and small-format brand work too. See Tobi’s portfolio for Frankfurter Allgemeine, Die Zeit and brand commissions in the same vein.
